Ice Age Fossils State Park is a signature project of the "Explore Your Nevada" initiative, celebrating the state's natural history and preservation efforts. Located on a 40-acre site, the development builds on Phase I by the Nevada Department of State Parks, which includes a visitor center, parking, restrooms, and trailheads.
CSD Architects led Phase II, introducing a new layer of functionality and educational impact across the site. Phase II features six custom shade structures placed throughout the park, each built to endure the desert climate and equipped with cast-in-place metal benches embedded with tumbled recycled glass.
The Megafauna and Mojave Garden Trails guide visitors through the landscape, while the Monumental Mammoth Trailhead creates a central point for school tours and learning groups. At its entrance stands a metal mammoth sculpture created by local artists using found materials collected from the site, establishing a powerful visual and interpretive landmark.
A Picnic Pavilion was designed as a flexible gathering space that accommodates educational programming, yoga classes, and casual dining through the relocation of durable exterior tables, a patio expansion on the east side of the visitor center, and shade structures built to withstand the desert environment with cast-in-place benches embedded with recycled glass.
CSD Architects is currently leading Phase III of the project, known as Trench K.
